Inspection, Investigation
The Federal Job Series 1800: Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement, and Compliance includes a lot of different administrative and law enforcement jobs that are important for keeping federal operations honest, safe, and accountable. People in this job category are in charge of doing inspections, investigations, and compliance checks in a number of areas, including criminal justice, labor standards, customs enforcement, and public safety.
GS-1801—General Inspection, Investigation, Enforcement, and Compliance—is the main part of this series. It is a catch-all for jobs that don’t fit into more specific investigative or enforcement series. Inspections, audits, and compliance checks are common tasks for people in these positions to make sure that laws, rules, and policies are followed.
The 1800 group also has several specialized sub-series, such as:
- GS-1810—General Investigation: This is about investigations that aren’t illegal, like fraud, waste, and abuse in federal programs.
GS-1811: Criminal Investigation: This is only for federal law enforcement personnel who look into crimes and have the power to arrest people and qualify for special retirement benefits. - GS-1822—Mine Safety and Health Inspection: Checking mining operations to make sure they follow health and safety rules.
- GS-1849: Wage and Hour Investigation: This checks that businesses are following labor rules, such as those about minimum wage, overtime, and child labor.
- GS-1850 – Agricultural Warehouse Inspection: Makes sure that agricultural storage facilities are inspected and followed the rules.
- GS-1860—Equal Opportunity Investigation: Looks into complaints of discrimination and makes sure that equal opportunity rules are followed.
- GS-1881 and GS-1895 are both Customs and Border Protection Interdiction and Customs and Border Protection series. They help with customs enforcement and border security.
- GS-1896—Border Patrol Enforcement: This job is all about patrolling and securing the U.S. borders to stop people from entering illegally and smuggling goods.
Jobs in the 1800 series often need people who are good at analyzing information, paying attention to details, and understanding and following complicated rules. Depending on the job, you may need to have law enforcement training, particular certificates, or experience with investigative tactics. Many jobs also require fieldwork, travel, and working with other organizations.
This job series is very important for making sure that the government follows the law, protects the public’s interests, and follows the rules across a wide range of government activities. The OPM’s official paper gives full information on precise classification standards and occupational definitions.
