Fabric and Leather Work

The Federal Job Series 3100 – Fabric and Leather Work is a group of skilled crafts jobs under the Federal Wage System (FWS). These jobs involve making, changing, fixing, and taking care of things made of fabric, leather, and other comparable materials. These jobs are important for meeting the military, medical, and operational needs of government agencies by making and keeping specialized textile-based equipment and clothing.

The Fabric Worker (3105) is one of the most important jobs in this series. These workers make and change a number of different things, like tents, awnings, parachutes, gun coverings, sleeping bags, uniforms, flags, belts, and clothes that protect them. You will need to use both hand tools and industrial sewing machines to take exact measurements, make patterns, cut materials, and put parts together. Cotton, wool, canvas, nylon, polyester, leather, vinyl, fiberglass, and even textiles that are metallic or rubbery can be employed.

People who work with fabric and leather need to know a lot about how textiles function, how to build things, and how to utilize adhesives, fasteners, and stitching processes correctly. Their labor often supports mission-critical tasks, such making sure that soldiers have gear that fits and works properly, or that hazardous situations have the right containment coverings and protective gear.

This series does not cover upholstery work (which is part of Series 3106) or sewing machine operating as a separate function (which is part of Series 3111). Instead, it concentrates on the bigger, more complicated jobs of developing, changing, and putting together fabric-based things from start to finish.
